چکیده

This study examines F0 influence on perception of Korean initial lax, aspirated, and tense consonants by Japanese learners of the Korean language. Stimuli consisted of monosyllabic sounds (/ta, tsa, ta, tsa/) with interchanged F0s, including lax and aspirated consonants. Results from recognition testing of the stimuli found that both beginning and advanced learners paid less attention to stimuli F0 in comparison to native speakers from Seoul. In cases where stimula included a tense stop (/t’a/), a tense affricate (/ts’a/), and a non-tense and a tense fricative (/sa, s’a/), F0 had no significant influence on recognition for the native speakers. In contrast, both the beginners and advanced learners focused on changes in F0, evaluating consonants by the changes. In the acquisition of Korean initial consonants (lax, aspirated, tense), Japanese learners are liable to adopt inaccurate judgment methods of either "insufficient focus on F0" or "excessive focus on F0", with learning experience showing no significant effect on acquisition.

Correlation between VOT and F0 in the perception of Korean stops and affricates

This research examines the trading correlation between VOT and F0 in the production and perception of the three-way distinction of Korean stops and affricates, namely, lenis, aspirated, and fortis, in the word-initial position. For this research, I conducted production and perception tests. For the production test, two female and two male native speakers of Seoul Korean recorded a monosyllabic ...

Attention to Critical Acoustic Features for L2 Phonemic Identification and its Implication on L2 Perceptual Training

This study examined whether native speakers of Japanese could attend to critical acoustic features while identifying lenis and aspirated among Korean alveolar stops. Most Japanese participants had studied Korean for more than one year at a university language center in Korea. Native speakers of Korean were also tested with the same task for comparison. Korean participants discriminated the phon...

Vowel length effects on the perception of geminate and singleton stop boundaries by Korean learners of Japanese

Generally, closure duration is a primary cue used to distinguish plosive geminate and singleton stops (Fukui, 1978). However, closure duration is not an absolute value. It is relative. That is, closure duration is controlled by the neighboring phonemes. However, it is not yet clear what factors affect the closure duration at the perceptual boundary between geminate and singleton stops by either...

VOT merger and f0 contrast in Heritage Korean in California

Recordings of read speech in Korean and English were made by native South Koreans and Korean Americans of varying generational status (“second-generation” American-born or “1.5-generation” foreign-born) and analyzed for differences in usage of VOT and fundamental frequency to contrast production of Korean lenis and aspirated stops and affricates. The speech was then played back to listeners of ...
